September 2019 Awaken City Church, lead by Derek Duvall, is leaving its footprint in Herriman City. Derek is passionate about service, as are the church members. He reached out to Herriman City to inquire about special event permits in order to run a community scavenger hunt, which forged a partnership between the church and City. The church sponsored and helped co-run the Yeti Hunt in 2017 and members have volunteered at several events since then, including the Fort Herriman Towne Days parade and the Herriman Howl. But they don't stop with only City events! Awaken City Church members have volunteered at a handful of schools, the recreation center, with committees, and within neighborhoods. They will wash windows, pull weeds, or run events just to name a few. They have held multiple neighborhood gatherings over the last two years that have brought in 300-500 people each. They also hosted a pancake breakfast to bring together new friends and neighbors. The relationships they build with those they serve and serve with bring the most gratification. Derek and his wife moved with their five children from Knoxville, Tennessee a little over two years ago, along with five other families. They knew they wanted to come to Utah but didn't have a particular location in mind other than the Salt Lake area. They found a home to rent in Herriman and fell in love with the community. They are permanent residents of Herriman now and look forward to the opportunities of serving those around them. Derek stated, "if we know the city better, we can serve it better." He wants the community to know they are here to serve and bless the city, not to be seen as a burden. He is proud to be a part of Herriman.
