City Council board and committee reports
City committee removals
The City Council passed an ordinance that removes several committees from under the City's direct oversight and places them within the Friends of Herriman non-profit group. Some members of those committees have expressed concern over long-term stability of their groups and work. The City will still donate and provide facilities and equipment for the group to function. It also allows for greater funding and grant opportunities.
Main Street widening project
The City is working toward widening and improving the western parts of Herriman Main Street. Landmark Excavating was the lowest bidding contractor. With funding available from the recent $10.5 million transportation bond (paid back by recurring state funds), the Water Fund, and other sources, the City has the budget available to complete the entire project, which was not expected in recent months.
Water conservation report
The Director of Public Works presented an report of water usage over the last few years. Residents and the City all took measures to conserve, which resulted in reduced water use in each of the last two years, despite continued growth. The City Council commended residents and staff for responding to drought needs and encouraged continued conservation.
Game Pointe property
The Council and the Game Pointe Properties development team discussed a new iteration of building concepts and a development layout for the commercial property adjacent to the auto mall. The concept includes office space, restaurants, and space for entertainment facilities. The Council generally liked what they saw and are comfortable to move forward with fine-tuning a master development agreement.
Blackridge Reservoir
The Council discussed a few different items relating to Blackridge Reservoir and surrounding neighborhood. They were not interested in agreeing to a contract for a company to provide food concessions and water equipment rentals on-site because of a concern for increased traffic to an already-overloaded location. Parking on-site and on nearby streets is a recurring issue during summer holidays. After seeing cost estimates for two parking lot expansion proposals, the Council declined to continue exploring expansion. The Council also opted to keep the status quo for the neighborhood's parking permit program after examining results from a recent resident survey.
Collegiate Rugby Shield sponsorship
The City was the premier sponsor last year of the Collegiate Rugby Shield pro scouting event, in partnership with the Utah Warriors. The Warriors approached the Council to propose a 2023 partnership. The Council is generally supportive of continuing to sponsor, but wants some numbers to show economic benefit and to formulate a marketing strategy.
