We Are Herriman - Herriman Rugby

July 2019 The Herriman High School Rugby program recently finished its 9th season, through the years it has grown to become not only the top program in the state, but one of the elite programs in the country. Competing in 7s (Olympic-style) rugby in the fall, and the primary season of 15s (traditional style) in the spring, the team boasts an overall Varsity record of 181 wins and 12 losses, with five of those losses coming to the national champion of those respective seasons. The team has won 11 Utah State Championships (six in 15s, five in 7s), including their current streak of five consecutive titles in the fall and four straight in the spring. Recently, the team finished 2nd at the High School National Championship for the second consecutive season, coming up just inches short of upsetting heavy favorite Jesuit (CA), the only team to defeat them this season. Herriman Rugby has finished in the top 5 nationally each of the past seven years, and is represented by 18 All-Americans and over 30 alumni currently competing in collegiate athletics (both rugby and football). On field success is only part of the story; however, as the program prides itself on a commitment to excellence in all aspects of life, including the classroom and the community. The starting 15 this season had an average GPA of 3.3 and found multiple opportunities to serve others. This past season, the team assisted a local school with their community fair, volunteered their time at the two Beehive Assisted Living Centers, and helped raise nearly $1,000 for a local youth's cancer treatment, who later was invited to be an official member of the team to participate in practices. The team also runs youth camps and participates in neighborhood clean ups and clothing drives for the needy. The program's expectation is that players exhibit high levels of character, kindness, and integrity at all times and that has a direct correlation to success on the field. The coaches teach that success is an all the time thing, either you are doing things the right way in every aspect of your life, or you're not. Championships don't come on the field unless these young men are, first, champions off of the field and in their daily lives. This season, the team is proud to say they have accomplished both.
